Sports: If the Montreal Expos really do move to Northern Virginia or DC next season, they should rename themselves the Washington Senators. There’s too much tradition at stake. I can just see Bud Selig asking the Devil Rays to move to the NL East, too. The Rays have been bombed in the AL East, where the Yankees and Red Sox dominate. As long as Baltimore Orioles owner Peter Angelos doesn’t mind, which I admit is a streatch of the imagination, the new Sens really belong in the AL East. Putting a DC baseball team in the National League just feels wrong to me, but Angelos may insist on protecting what he considers his territory.

USA: Van Odell admits he has no documentation to back up his claims against Kerry. Kerry actually has witnesses to support his documented actions in the field, and witnesses keep coming forward. Michelle Malkin won’t admit she was wrong when she got hacked up on Hardball over the so-called “self-inflicted wounds” story.
W has flimsy documentation and no real witnesses to support his own claim that he was not AWOL from the Guard. W’s campaign seems to be coordinating the Swifties at some level, and the Swifties are contradicting themselves.
Kerry actually fought in Vietnam when W, Cheney, Wolfowitz and others were hiding at home. W is trying to reassure doubting Republicans, lest they stay home on Election Day. End of story.

USA: Maureen Dowd in the New York Times provides a nice summary of the Swiftie mess: “Reports in The New York Times and The Washington Post last week made it clear that the vile Swift boaters have told wildly varying accounts, sometimes supportive of Mr. Kerry. The Times revealed that Swift Boat Veterans for Truth - is that like the administration’s Clear Skies Act for spewing pollution? - has a trellis of ties to Karl Rove, the Bush family and Bush supporters…. It makes sense for W. to use surrogates to do his fighting, just as he did when he slid out of Vietnam and just as he did when he sent our troops to fight his administration’s misbegotten vanity war in Iraq.”
Meanwhile, Edwards challenges W. to call off his attack dogs, and William Rood provides more support for Kerry’s story. Where’s W? He’s cowering in Crawford this week before attending next week’s riots, er, the Republican convention in NYC.

USA: The New York Times reports on the latest round of terror alerts. No one could possibly believe that W’s administration would announce a fake alert just 3 days after the opposition party’s convention, but “… a terror threat is much more sobering to those who live in New York and Washington, which includes much of the nation’s political and news media ranks. At the same time some Democrats wondered Sunday whether Americans, after hearing so many of these threats, might begin to disregard them. Senator Charles Schumer, Democrat of New York, said in an interview that the focus on continuing threats, three years after Sept. 11, was evidence that Mr. Bush was highly vulnerable on this issue. “I think this is one of the sleeper issues of this campaign,” Mr. Schumer said. “It’s one where Kerry can show strength and at the same time show that this administration hasn’t really thought through the war on terror.”“

USA: Bush’s 9/11 Farce from Richard Cohen washingtonpost.com: Cohen calles out 43 for opposing the 9-11 commission at first, and now rushing to implement selected suggestions to help his reelection prospects. But there’s blame enough for both sides here. The party conventions are irrelevant this year. “In fact, there is something a bit wacky about the Democratic Party taking a week to mount a meaningless Mardi Gras when the terrorism clock supposedly ticks closer to midnight.”
