What are we learning?

Michael Wesch of Kansas State University produced this video commentary on classroom learning. I found it interesting. I haven’t been in a “cattle-call hall” since my undergraduate years. I don’t miss these large classrooms at all. They’re cold and impersonal.

I do enjoy teaching online and in our friendly small classrooms at HPU! Twenty-four students seems like the right size for a graduate class.

Multiple choice exams are fine, when used in moderation. But objective questions cannot measure mastery of a subject, especially when the textbook publisher’s test bank is available through Google.

I give writing assignments because managers must develop excellent written communication skills. The Internet has not changed that requirement.

Sports: Devil Rays 10, Royals 1. Two in a row for the Rays. “Mark Hendrickson gave up four hits in his second complete game in three starts and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays handed the Kansas City Royals their sixth straight loss, 10-1 Wednesday night. Jose Cruz Jr., Aubrey Huff and Tino Martinez homered for the Devil Rays, who have won two in a row following a six-game losing streak. Tampa Bay hit just 17 homers in the previous 24 games… The Royals have the worst record (35-64) in the American League and are 7-24 since June 24.”

Hawaii: Removal of ancient bones halts work at Wal-Mart - The Honolulu Advertiser - Hawaii’s Newspaper: Wal-Mart lies, and the past is coming back to haunt them. Is northern Arkansas urbanized, too? “An archaeologist has determined that some of the 42 sets of remains that have been found at six burial spots on the Wal-Mart property may be from the 1853 smallpox epidemic that struck Honolulu. The state has determined, in consultation with the O’ahu Burial Council and cultural descendants, that those remains will be moved to a reburial site on the property, rather than left where they were found or grouped with other iwi kupuna at another location. A preconstruction survey of the site had concluded that the property had been urbanized for so long, it was unlikely any remains would be found. Wal-Mart repeatedly has said it met or exceeded state requirements, including performing an archaeological survey of the site, hiring an archaeologist to be on hand during digging, stopping work immediately when any bones are found and notifying the State Historic Preservation Division of the find.”

USA: Yahoo! News - AT&T Won’t Seek New Customers in 7 States: “AT&T said it would no longer offer the services, as a bundle or individually, to new residential customers in Ohio, Missouri, Washington, Tennessee, Louisiana, Arkansas and New Hampshire, where almost 38 million Americans live. It will continue to sell those services to business customers and current residential customers. The company also said it was reviewing its residential business in the 39 other states where it offers local telephone service. ‘The ability to bundle local and long-distance services has become an essential aspect of competition in the long-distance market,’ said AT&T spokeswoman Claudia Jones. ‘AT&T and other competitors will not be able to effectively compete in the residential long-distance market without a viable local product.’ ”
