IS 6100 and MGMT 6050 for Fall 2008

This page was last modified on Monday, 25 August 2008, 12:45 HST @865

I will teach an online section of IS 6100 in Fall 2008 at Hawaii Pacific University.

The course is cross-listed as MGMT 6050.

Both courses are identical, with the same assignments, readings and activities.

Syllabus

I posted a syllabus PDF document for the Fall 2008 section on 25 August 2008. This is the same document that is posted in WebCT.

Course schedule

There’s a basic course schedule included in the syllabus link above. I’ll be posting more details on WebCT.

For the first 2 weeks of class, read chapter 1 of the textbook.

If you want to read ahead, chapter 2 is a good place to go.

There is a written assignment due almost every week. It’s usually a draft version of a paper, a final version of a paper, or an exam.

The course includes a midterm exam and a final exam. Both exams use essay questions.

I assign one textbook chapter per week as a reading assignment. There are several additional readings and articles that accompany each chapter.

Web sites and services

This is a course about how organizations use information systems to develop sustainable competitive advantage in their markets. During the course, students use several different web sites and services, to develop practical experience in using these technologies.

billso.com is my blog and web site, and I have been posting readings and assignment announcements there. The blog is open to the public, and can be accessed on many PDAs and mobile phones.

WebCT is my grade and assignment management system.

HPU’s web page with the Fall 2008 course calendar.

HPU’s web page for IS 6100 includes a course description, prerequisites, and a master schedule. Remember, IS 6100 and MGMT 6050 are the same course.

Textbook

We are using a new textbook this term:

Baltzan, P. & Phillips, A. (2009). Essentials of Business Driven Information Systems. New York, N.Y.: McGraw Hill-Irwin.

ISBN: 9780073376721
