Tech: Wired 12.07: Copy This Article & Win Quick Cash!“In fact, successful hoaxes have always preyed on our tendency to imagine the future through the lens of our own hopes and worries. A celebrated 19th-century prank convinced millions that Thomas Edison had invented a machine capable of converting soil into cereal. A “top secret” report that became a best-seller in 1967 concluded that an end to war “would almost certainly not be in the best interest of stable society.” Publication of the deadpan parody led Lyndon Johnson to cable every US embassy, insisting the report didn’t reflect foreign policy.”

CNN.com - A dream of a 1,000-year camera - Jun 29, 2004: “At a frame a day, a year’s worth of shots over a particular city would add up to 15 seconds of film, a decade would blow by in two and a half minutes and a century would run 25 minutes. A full 1,000 years of film would last just over four hours.”

USA: CNN.com - Soldier’s mom invites media coverage of casket - Jun 29, 2004: Yes, the military doesn’t have authority over civilians, at least in the US. It’s a different story in iraq. Don’t let the power go to your heads, boys and girls. ‘The Pentagon’s rules “are specifically for the airlift command, when the caskets are on the military plane,” said Lt. Jonathan Shiroma, spokesman for the California National Guard. “This is a commercial jet, so it’s a different jurisdiction, so to speak. We cannot stop the media from filming.”’

Tech: Yahoo! News - School Teaches ‘Ethical Hacking’ to Computer Students: I am dubious. Some of their certification exams are offered through Prometric’s web-based service, which makes saving the questions as easy as using a digital camera or a screen capture program. The Prometric testing centers try to check for cheating. And their logo looks a lot like Net Guru’s CIW logo. I sometimes wish Prosoft had ackowledged that there are many other CIWs. “The course prepares students for an exam offered by the International Council of E-Commerce Consultants, or EC-Council. If they pass that test, they get the ultimate seal of approval: Certified Ethical Hacker. The class is by no means easy. Instructors race through topics like symmetric versus asymmetric key cryptography (symmetric is faster), war dialing (hackers will always call late at night) and well-known TCP ports and services (be wary of any activity on Port 0). ”

Sports: Yahoo! Sports - MLB - Devil Rays 10, Blue Jays 2: “Carl Crawford shrugged off what is becoming a typical performance for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays leadoff man. The 22-year-old emerging star went 4-for-5, scored three runs, stole two bases and had an RBI in a 10-2 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday night. ”
