Sports: Rays Run Streak To Eight - from Tampa Bay Online: “The Devil Rays completed a three-game sweep of the Padres with a 4-1 victory Thursday, extending the team’s record win streak to eight games. The sweep was Tampa Bay’s second in a row (they also swept Colorado at Tropicana Field), a franchise first. It also improved the Rays’ interleague record this season to 8-1, giving them five more victories against the National League than they had in all of 2003. ”

Tech: BW Online | June 21, 2004 | Online Extra: Q&A With MIT’s Nicholas Negroponte: “Peer-to-peer is key. I mean that in every form conceivable: cell phones without towers, sharing leftover food, bartering, etc. Furthermore, you will see micro-wireless networks, where everyday devices become routers of messages that have nothing to do with themselves.

Nature is pretty good at networks, self-organizing systems. By contrast, social systems are top-down and hierarchical, from which we draw the basic assumption that organization and order can only come from centralism. ”

Tech: Los Angeles Times: Broadband Market Is About to Heat Up: “The regional phone companies seem to be off to a strong start. In the first quarter, they added slightly more than 1 million broadband lines, outpacing cable companies for the first time. In California, DSL lines outnumber cable. Nationwide, though, DSL and the phone companies offering it are a distant second, accounting for just more than one-third of the 30 million broadband lines. High-speed Internet access remains a relatively small piece of revenue for phone and cable companies. But it’s growing while traditional cable and local phone services are flattening out - and even shrinking.”

Sports: Rays Aren’t Out Of The Woods Yet - from Tampa Bay Online: “Tampa Bay still has 24 games to play against New York and Boston. In order to catch up to the Red Sox’s pace of 95 victories, the Rays would have to go 68-33 over their last 101 games. They’ve only won more than 68 games in an entire season twice (1999-2000). Hence, Piniella’s words of caution to exuberant fans not quite used to a string of success as long as this has been. “I want to caution them not to get too excited right now,” Piniella said. “I want to be realistic. We made a bad streak and we’re having a good streak. The important thing is how we consolidate. But the players are having fun and they’re confident. They feel they can win, and that’s a big part of it.” ”
